The Hobie Fishing Worlds 5, presented by Rhino-Rack in China in 2015, is set to be exceptional tournament with the world’s elite of kayak angling destined to battle it out on Shang Lake, Changshu. The outstandingly beautiful, ancient setting where legendary Chinese hero Jiang Shang cast his place in Chinese history, is the arena where in November 2015 a “New Legend of Shang Lake” will rise from the waters to be crowned Hobie Fishing World Champion.
Over 3,000 years ago in China, a simple peasant, Jiang Shang, struggled with a poor life as a child. He grew up in his early manhood to be a butcher and a wine seller. As a young man he always had high aspirations, studied hard and in time would become an outstanding military strategist and statesman.
Unhappy with the cruel king of the time, King Chou of the Shang Dynasty, the disillusioned Jiang Shang went into seclusion taking refuge and fishing around the Weishui River and Shang Lake (the lake that would one day be named after him).
The future king, King Wen of Zhou came upon the now eighty year old Jiang as he fished around the lake. The old man held his well-crafted rod high in his hand, he murmured something to himself and never appeared to dip his fishing line in the water. Surprisingly, he used no bait, some say he was using a lure, a technique never witnessed before.
From their meeting Jiang was to become King Wen’s strategist and chief minister and he helped China to become prosperous after overthrowing King Chou. He was later appointed Duke of Qi and was re-known as an outstanding military strategist, benevolent, righteous and loyal statesman, while never losing his love for and skill in fishing.
Shang Lake was named to honour the impact on Chinese history made by Jiang Shang and to recognise his origins and legendary fishing skills around the lake. In 2015 the 5th Hobie Fishing World Champion will be crowned and the old man himself, Jiang Shang, would be proud and privileged to fish alongside, “The New Legend of Shang Lake”.
